Zambartas Maratheftiko

Maratheftiko is a very unique grape because, unlike most varieties, it is not self-pollinating. This means it needs another grape variety planted nearby in the vineyard in order to set fruit properly. Without that, yields are very low and unpredictable. This is one of the reasons Maratheftiko almost disappeared for many years, it’s difficult to grow and requires extra care in the vineyard. Today, with better understanding and vineyard management, it’s recognised as one of Cyprus’ most exciting indigenous red grapes, producing wines with depth, freshness and great ageing potential.

Description

Grape type: 100% Maratheftiko- Pachna, Omodos, Vasa and Agios Therapon.

Vinification: This Maratheftiko is carefully hand-sorted to select the very best grapes from Limassol’s high-altitude vineyards. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for a year in mostly used oak with a touch of new, it’s a rich, structured wine with depth, silky tannins, and layered dark fruit. This wine can age beautifully for 7–8 years, revealing even more complexity over time.

Tasting notes: Giving a blend of red roses, black cherries, red berries and sweet spice alongside the characteristic aroma of violets often attributed to the Maratheftiko grape.

Food pairing: The rich, round flavours of this wine make it a great accompaniment to grilled lamb, pork and beef. It is perfect to be enjoyed alongside traditional souvla.
